Re-Generation – art as a catalyst for renewal in the face of cancer

Regeneration art exhibtion poster

A UK wide exhibition of contempory Artists exploring personal responses of being affected by cancer.

In 2006 Re-Generation was launched to much public acclaim and media attention in London’s prestigious County Hall Gallery.

Throughout the 2 week show it attracted over 3000 visitors, and national media attention. Artists who have been affected by cancer, either directly or through a family member or friend, come together to produce a unique, positive and striking exhibition of painting, drawing, photography, video and installation to explore their personal experiences of cancer.

We attracted internationally acclaimed Artists such as Nick Waplington who previewed his epic piece ‘Special Creation, Intelligent Design’ and Gina Glover who shared her stunning Gene Cell photographs. Re-Generation is about all artists who had been afflicted by the disease some terminally ill, sharing there experiences. Similarly Cancer is a level playing ground it doesn’t discriminate, Re-Generation choices the work of Artists based on relevance, and strength rather then individual success.

What is hoped is that Re-Generation gives Artists the opportunity to explore and express the very real issues surrounding Cancer. It is hoped through surprising and creative approaches the Art will be a catalyst for renewal in the face of the disease.

Regeneration art exhibits

Re-Generation is an important art exhibition confronting contemporary responses to cancer and offering the hope of redeeming negative attitudes to the disease through contemporary artworks. The show is a group exhibition for around 25 artists who are making personal responses to the theme ‘Cancer’. It is hoped that Re-Generation will become a Bi-Annual Exhibition and become an event in the Art Worlds Calendar. The show will also act as a snap-shot of the best new art being made in Britain today.

A national advertising campaign through Freeze and AN magazine will attract Artists to submit proposals and work for the show . Re-Generation will be approaching individual acclaimed Artists and Galleries to commission responses for the show.

To host the event Re-Generation will require between 150-200 liner meters of hanging space with 3000 sqft of floor space for over 100 pieces of selected art works. 25% of the profits from the show will be used to support Artists work through commissions which will be held every 6 months. The Long term ambitions for Re-Generation is to become a charity status company and offer short term relief to families suffering from the stress of terminal Cancer through much needed financial support. We hope that we maybe able to bring families together and relieve the stress of such a difficult time.

We have approached the Barbican as we believe that its an ideal space for our event as we would like the space to be central and the show to be on to the public for at least 3 Months. This would allow for the public the time to view the show as well as gain National media attention through reviews and publications. Re-Generation is a very important contempory art exhibition allowing artists to express the very serious issues related to this disease. The work produced is really powerful and emotive it has an amazing affect on the public. It allows art to be a form of communication and to truly express what sometimes is so hard to put into words instigating dialogue between artist and spectator.

Art is a really important means of communication, through this show we can explore many different view points and prospective on the subject of cancer. Cancer is such a huge, difficult thing to deal with, what we see is the humanity and passion and strength in the work. 1 in 4 people in the country have been in affected by this disease which means pretty much everybody has known someone who has had Cancer.

We hope that you also believe that this Exhibition is important enough for your serious consideration.

Quotes:

"I think this is the most beautiful exhibition I have ever seen, because the art has un-self-conscious meaning directly to the people who made it, and it explores a feeling to the public that isn’t love or lust or hate, just personal. I wish more exhibitions were this honest. It brought tears to my eyes x"

"As a Cancer survivor (I hope) this exhibition has greatly touched me. I can see the Artists ‘get’ how I feel about my life now and my range of emotions. I also lost my mother to the same cancer which 3 years later- is still very raw to me (maybe because of my own diagnosis) Thank you all for doing your bit and understanding. Not everyone does! X"
